When is it good to take risks?
Concerts Penzance present their 4th Humphry Davy Science Lecture with music at 7.30pm on Friday 25th April at Humphry Davy School, with Prof. David Spiegelhalter, Winton Professor of the Public Awareness of Risk at Cambridge University and musicians from South West Music School.
In addition to his work at Cambridge University, distinguished statistician Prof. David Spiegelhalter has been guest columnist for the Times, Guardian and New Scientist. He appears frequently on radio and television where matters of risk and uncertainty are discussed, including Radio 4 programmes Today, numerous appearances on More or Less concerning, for example, alcohol risks and football, You and Yours, The Investigation, Analysis, and PM. His work was featured in an episode of The Life Scientific in June 2013. On television Prof. Spiegelhalter fronted Tails you win: the science of chance, first shown on BBC4, and also appeared in the BBC4 documentary The Joy of Stats, BBC2 Horizon programme To Infinity and Beyond and Professor Regan's Medicine Cabinet .
“My proudest achievement is doing moderately well in the first, and only, series of Winter Wipeout on BBC1 - I did this in the guise of 'Professor Risk' and felt it a professional obligation to tackle the Big Red Balls.” said Prof. Spiegelhalter, who brings to life the world of statistics and risk with and energetic and engaging manner.
The lecture is framed with live music given by talented local musicians from South West Music Shool.
