The
Concerts Penzance series of international quality classical music events continues
through the winter months. On Saturday
11th February at 7.30pm, Concerts Penzance welcome back the Doric String
Quartet whose members first performed in Penzance 6 years ago. Now firmly established as the leading
British string quartet of its generation,
the quartet is now attracting major awards for it’s outstanding concerts
and recordings. The Doric continues the
series of Haydn quartets which have featured in several of this season’s
concerts and the programme ends with Beethoven’s second Razumovsky quartet
op.54 no.2. The central work is Berg’s Lyric
Suite – one of the pinnacle works for string quartet of the early 20th
century, fusing highly romantic passion with revolutionary tonality. Tickets cost £12 or £3 for under 21s.
On Sunday 26th March at 2.30pm, Concerts Penzance present their Fifth
Humphry Davy Science and Music Lecture at Zennor Theatre, Penwith College. Marcus du Sautoy, Simonyi Professor for the
Public Understanding of Science at Oxford University and Britian’s leading
Maths advocate explores Messiaen’s
Maths. Composed and premiered
at the Nazi war camp where the composer was imprisoned, Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time is one
of the most ethereally beautiful works of the 20th century – and also one of
the most mathematically complex. With live musical excerpts, mathematician Marcus du Sautoy visualises the
numerical intricacies and ideas that inspired the music, followed by a complete
performance of the quartet given by musicians from the Royal Academy of Music, Charles
Dale-Harris clarinet, Kate Oswin violin,
Ghislaine McMullin cello
and Joseph Havlat piano. Tickets cost £8 or £3 for under 21s.
Tickets
