Composed and premiered at the Nazi war camp where the composer was imprisoned, Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time is one of the most ethereally beautiful works of the 20th century – and also one of the most mathematically complex. With live musical excerpts, mathematician Marcus du Sautoy visualises the numerical intricacies and ideas that inspired the music, followed by a complete performance of the quartet.
