Look out for the Concerts Penzance 2019 – 2020 brochure
which comes out
on Friday 13th September
Six concerts given by amazing
musicians in the centre of Penzance.
There are three pairs of related concerts this season, with a little
thread of music by Brahms and Schumann (both Robert and Clara) that weaves
through four of the concerts. And for
the first time we welcome the influence of Jazz, first through the music of
Gershwin, and then with John Law’s Re-creations.
International
String Quartets
October 19th the Esmé String Quartet perform an
interesting programme
including music by Mozart, Bridge, Webern and Schumann.
In just three years the Esmé Quartet have gained a massive reputation
and are already much in demand across Europe, Canada and Korea. Winners of the 2018
Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition and four of the five special
prizes at this illustrious event, this concert forms part of a prize-winner’s
tour of Britain.
February 8th the Heath
Quartet return to Concerts Penzance
performing quartets by Beethoven and
Brahms.
The dynamic and charismatic Heath Quartet first visited Concerts
Penzance as young ‘rising stars’ but a decade later the quartet have earned a
reputation as one of the most exciting British chamber ensembles today with
regular performances at leading venues across Europe and North America.
International
Soloists Recitals
December 7th Maxim Rysanov viola and Ashley Wass
piano
Music by Bach,
Britten, Akhunov, Schumann & Tabakova
Maxim Rysanov’s playing has been described as being like Uri Bashmet in
his prime but better! Hear his
performance at the Last Night of the Proms here if you want proof
that Maxim is absolutely at the top of the profession.
Ashley Wass is one of Britain’s most creative
pianists – a soloist of the highest calibre with appearances with leading
orchestras and festivals across Europe and beyond and a distinguished chamber
musician, his career includes examples of virtually every way possible to share
and deepen musical understanding.
March 14th Charles Owen & Dominic Degavino piano
2 and 4 hands
The Romantic Piano – Music by Brahms
and the Schumanns
Charles Owen’s performance of Bach’s Goldberg Variations for us last
April left no one in the building in any doubt that they were in the presence
of greatness – he received what is probably the most rapturous standing ovation
we have ever offered any of our visitors.
In March he returns with Dominic Degavino, one of Britains’s
exceptionally talented new generation pianists, in a programme inspired by
Charles’s latest and highly acclaimed CD of Brahm’s piano music.
Classical
meets Jazz
November 9th Anush Hovhannisyan soprano and Sam
Jewison piano
Gershwin and Friends
Highly
acclaimed musicians Anush Hovhannisyan and Sam Jewison celebrate the great
composer George Gershwin, whose music is as rooted as much in the classical
tradition as it is in jazz - a programme exploring life and love with touching
humour.
Anush’s
recital for Concerts Penzance last season was totally captivating – a total treat
from beginning to end. Unusually we have
decided to invite her back immediately – and make sure many more people have the
opportunity to hear such amazing singing.
Sam Jewison brings a unique blend of classical and jazz to the programme
- as if the whole programme has just been improvised.
January 4th John Law Quartet
Re-creations
With
appearances at over fifty festivals and with thirty albums and rising, John Law
is one of the most interesting, diverse and prolific jazz pianists in Britain. Alongside
classic jazz standards the quartet plays intriguing new arrangements of songs
by The Beatles, Sting, Radiohead, Adele, Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, weaving in
classical works by Rossini, Satie and others. Featuring Sam Crockatt on
Saxophones, James Agg on bass and Paolo Adamo, on drums and percussion.
